Wood Lake Engineers
The Wood Lake Engineers, are a group of volunteers who meet on the second Saturday of
every month from March to November. This committee addresses current maintenance needs of
the camp, along with making recommendations for the future.
We are always looking for help with
carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, heavy equipment, welding, and general labor.
Another important area is procurement. We need to locate the parts needed at the best
price possible.
On most dates, we meet at the
shop at 8:00 a.m. South Bend time.

Words from Wood Lake
As I sit here writing this, Thanksgiving is right around the corner and a good time to…well, give thanks!
About a month ago was the first Wood Lake Engineers workday and it was quite a success. 18 volunteers were on hand to complete a number of tasks: Hap and Butch Ferry, Dennis and Cody Vanden-Bossche, Rodger Veatch, Cliff Bingaman, Jr. and III, Al Benham, Bob Elkins, Ralph Lybarger, Jim Trader, Burt Miller, Louis Trost, Don Parker, Charlie Bussard, and of course Ranger George all pitched in to finish a lot of much needed work. The second half of the new shop/warehouse floor was poured and finished. Trenching to run conduit for electric and communication cable was dug, conduit installed, and backfilled. A lot of siding and exterior work on the shop was completed. The dining hall water system was winterized. The septic system for the Health Lodge and Director’s Lodge was repaired. This job was finished by illumination of vehicle headlights at 8:45 p.m. That’s dedication!
I’d also like to thank my son, Jacob Denning, who prepared lunch for the volunteers. And a BIG THANK YOU to Ron Hartline, who wasn’t present, but lent us use of his excavator, which made completion of many jobs possible. It should be noted that the Executive Committee and Mr. Bridges manage to find ways to fund these projects, with already stretched budgets.
In closing, I’d really like to thank my friend, Ranger George. George works tirelessly to keep camp running smoothly and has done so for 23 years. He has managed to make do when money, supplies, and additional help were in short supply, but with a great sense of humor while making it as fun as possible.
I wish all of you the Best and Happy Holidays.
Yours in Scouting,
Scott Denning
