Wood Lake Scout Reservation

Mix & Fix

April 10, 2010

On Saturday April 10, 2010 the Wood Lake Engineers in conjunction with FOWLSA (Friends of Wood Lake and Staff Association) will host the  Mix & Fix. The purpose of this event is 1). Perform needed maintenance at Wood Lake. 2). Help supplement the maintenance budget by using resources within the units to obtain material and labor. 3). Help instill ownership and pride to every unit who participates. 4). Meet Scouts and Scouters along with the Engineers and FOWLSA members.

Units will review the maintenance list and pick a project. Projects that have material currently on hand only need to supply the labor. Projects where material is not currently available, units will need to use their recourses to obtain these items. Units will need to notify Ranger George woodlake@myrural.com what project they have picked as soon as possible. The projects will be awarded on a first come first served basis. Some projects are large enough that two or more units can work together in completing the task. All units will need to verify that the material is located and available by March 20, 2010.

Units participating in this program will receive a free campsite for the event. Lunch on Saturday will be provided for all participants.

This is a great opportunity for each unit to help insure that their resident camp facility is in top notch shape. Every project is important and meaningful. If a unit has a project that is not on the list, but would like to work on it, please contact Ranger George. It will be presented to the Engineers for their approval. If it is a large project, it may have to go before the Council Properties Committee. So please send these added projects in as early as possible for approval.

We hope to see all of you at the  Mix & Fixes at Wood Lake Scout Reservation.

Ranger George & Engineers chair Scott.

Mix & Fix

April 10, 2010

1). Lay sheet goods in Directors Lodge. 4 to 5 people

The bedrooms and kitchen area need to have he old flooring removed and sheet goods cut and glued to the floor. Currently we have a contact for the new flooring. Adhesive and tools still need to be acquired.

2). Build new rack for boats and canoes.5 to 7 people.

The wood boat and canoe racks on the beach are showing their age. The old lumber that has cracked or rotted will need to be removed. All nails and screws will need to be removed. New treated lumber will need to be installed. Currently all material will need to be provided by the unit.

3). Conservation wallboards need replaced. 5 to 7 people

The siding of the conservation pavilion needs to have the siding replaced. The old boards will need to be taken down, and the new cedar boards will need to be replaced. The lumber is on hand, but hardware and fasteners are not.

4). Lay sheet goods, Health lodge.4 to 5 people

The old tile floor has been removed in the kitchen and hallway of the Health Lodge. The furniture and appliances will need to be removed and the floor cleaned. Sheet goods will need to be cut and glued to the floor. Currently we have a contact for the sheet goods, but not the tools or adhesive.

5). Replace doors, Sollitt Lodge (south side). 5 to 7 people..

The winter lodge at Camp Welber, has 5 32" doors that need replaced.   Currently no materials are available.

6). Install new water main to storage tank.15 to 20 people.

The old 3" plastic pipe has begun to show its age. Currently 500’ of the pipe has been purchased to run the line from the well house to the first valve near the old shower house. We hope this line is installed when new electric lines are buried near the same location this fall. The line will need to be continued next to the parade field and to the water tank. Currently the 500’ of 3" is all we have on hand at this point. 1500’ will need to be purchased or donated along with fittings. The use of a trencher or small excavator would be very helpful. Also we have 5 repair fittings on the old line we would like to salvage.

7). Install new siren system. 3 to 5 people

The old system has become a high maintenance item. Some research has been done and some talks have accrued to update this system. A wireless system with the ability to cover more area of camp would be desirable.

8). Lay block corner posts for washstands 5 to 7 people per.

The wood support posts at all washstands other than Delaware are rotting and becoming loose. Delaware has had cement block mortared at the 4 corners and the roof reset. This seems to be the way to make permanent repairs to the other 14 washstands. Each unit takes 40 blocks and the required mortar to set them. No Material is available at this time.

9). Remove furnaces (3) from dining hall 4 to 5 people.

The 1950’s hanging space heaters are no longer useable. Taking these 3 units apart and removing them will prevent someone from trying to light them off. All propane lines and electric lines can be removed.

10). Replace all water drain valves. 5 to 7 people

The boiler drains for the water system to the campsites have begun to break and leak. Remove old drains at each 10" drain box and replace with ½" ball valves. Currently no material is available for this project.

11). Remove all old fences on property. 15 to 25 people

A walk on the property lines and in some cases well inside the camp we will find old fence and wire. We need to gather this wire and cut it into manageable size. Haul the wire to the road edge where the tractor and trailer can pick it up. Gloves and wire cutters will need to be brought by the unit.

12). Repair erosion on sides of ramp to waterfront. 10 to 15 people.

The shoulders of the road to the waterfront are eroded. We have sand available at the sand pit. Loader and dump truck would be helpful to move the material to the sight. Sand is all we currently have available. Material that would hold better during a rain would be preferred. Grass seed and fertilizer needs to be raked in after the fill is in place. Currently sand is the only material on hand for this project.

13). Repair floor Staff Cabin #2. 3 to 4 people

The cabin is beginning to separate at the floor almost in the center of the structure. The cabin will need to be wrapped and drawn together and then a floor joist screwed to the frame. Some lumber is available.

14). Split and Stack Firewood 5 to 6 people.

Now that we are not allowing firewood to be imported into camp, the ranger staff has cut and placed wood to be split for troop use at the east end of the parking lot. The wood needs to be split and stacked. Axes are available from the Q.M. or a splitter could be brought into camp. Many tops are available to cut into firewood. Adults can bring their chainsaw into camp and cut downed tops but not cut standing trees (chainsaw safety course completion a requirement) ask ranger George for details.

15). Build second log Adirondack in outpost. 7 to 10 people

Follow the direction of the Outpost Director (Dennis). A chain saw will be required and used by the Ranger Staff.

16). Remove cattails from beach & fishing area. 15 to 20 people

Use shovels to dig the roots out of the lake bottom. Pile all brush along the edge of the west site of ramp. Do not let leaves float away, they can re-sprout new plants.

17). Erosion control at Potawatomi Campsite 7 to 9 people.

Poles are available and can be transported by the ranger staff. Posts need to be purchased for this

project. Rope to tie off the poles as there are being set is available at the Q M.

18). Rebuild culvert on road between Blair Lodge and Huron.8 to 10 people

The West face of the culvert has shifted and some logs have rotted. The face needs to be removed and the dirt needs to be dug vertically. The face needs to be replaced using black locust logs and pole stock. The unit can use R.R. ties if they provide the ties. Currently pole stock and logs are available.

19). Rebuild seating at Council fire bowl. 10 to 20 people Mr. Chase

The R.R. ties are beginning to shift and the lumber that caps the ties is beginning to show its age. The ties will need to be dug out and reset. New tops will need to be nailed into the ties. Currently we only have the nails on hand.

20). Pour handicapped accessible ramp and pads for shotgun cages. 4 to 7 people.

We are currently drawing plans, and applying for a grant to pour a cement ramp from the rifle range pavilion to the shotgun shooting stations. Forms will need to be set, concrete will need to be purchased and finished. Units interested in this project can contact Ranger George for an update on the status of the grant.

21). Service Patrol 8 to 10 people

A unit is needed to provide support for this event. The dining hall will need to be set up for lunch. The kitchen crew will need help in opening and closing the kitchen. The dining hall will need to be cleaned up after lunch.

22). Remove Garlic-Mustard 30 to 50 people.

As with most woodlots in the area we are being overrun with the invasive plant Garlic-Mustard. Units selecting this project should start at the main entrance and work from the road edge to Arapaho campsite and East to the athletic field. 100% of the plants need to be picked to be effective.

23). Paint doors at Reith Shower House. 6 to 7 people

Scratches, foot marks and drawings are currently on the doors of the shower house. A fresh coat of paint will make a big difference in this buildings appearance. Hardware will need to be removed, doors lightly sanded and washed before painting. Currently no materials are on hand.

24). Fill cracks in main road. 10 to 15 people

cracks need to be cleaned out with brooms or compressed air (adult with safety gear). Crack filler then needs to be inserted into cracks. No material available this time.

25). Replace windows Blair Lodge. 3 to 4 people

The old single pane windows leak and are a source of heat loss in the winter. Replacement windows will help to bring energy costs down and improve the looks of the building. Currently no materials are on hand.

26). Replace windows Directors Lodge. 4 to 5 people

This building is used all summer and every weekend in the winter. Replacing the old single pane windows will greatly effect the heating and cooling costs. The replacement windows will also give the building a fresh look. Currently no materials are available.

27). New fishing pier. 15 o 20 people

The old Fishing pier has been used for the last 21 years. It has been rebuilt twice and is once again need of attention. A complete rebuild or a new fishing pier would be a great addition to the fishing program. Currently no materials are on hand.

28). Picnic table construction. 10 to 12 people.

With a minimum of 3 tables in every campsite (16) and program areas, tables are always needing to be changed out. We have a new design that worked well this year. Units interested in building tables can e-mail Ranger George for the design sheet. Having 20 more of these tables would help insure that most of the tables that need to be replaced, can be.

29). Seed yard at construction site.

New Construction on septic system requires seeding of new grass in the following areas. Between Health Lodge and Directors Lodge, front yard of Directors Lodge, at the old shower house location. Also, we need to seed around the new construction site of Rotary Lodge and O.A. Lodge. Contractors Mix of seed works best in this area. The area will need to be raked down before seed is planted.
