DIVERSITY

We are a collection of different people – different ethnic backgrounds, cultures, religious beliefs; from different educational systems, courses of study, work and life experiences, varying economic positions and health status; with a variety of interests and hobbies.

This is what makes us diverse.  The more we interact and learn from one another, the more interesting and fulfilling our lives become.

Indiana’s background and human history evolved over time.  The area known as LaSalle Council was populated by many different Indian tribes.  We usually remember tribal names such as the Potawatomi  , the Iroquois, the Algonquins.  It’s quite interesting if you take the time to learn about them, and trace those tribes back in time to the area you live in.

Our own forefathers came from many countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.  This too makes our families interesting to study.  Can you trace back your family roots to three or more generations ago?

We also come to know and appreciate that our religious beliefs may be similar but different.  This country was founded on a number of principles, one very important one being the Freedom of Religion.  It is not uncommon to have scouts in the same troop that have a mixture of Baptists, Lutherans, Catholics, Methodists, Episcopalians, Jewish or Muslims.   We can learn more about each other by asking, knowing, and acknowledging each other’s faith.  Scouts take an oath to “do your duty to God and Country”.

Living the truth about diversity means to honor and respect all people regardless of their background, their education, their wealth, their religion or culture.  That’s why we say in our oath, “to help other people at all times” – especially remembering and helping those less fortunate than yourself.

So this Diversity webpage will be dedicated to stories, information, events, literature, songs, food, games and a better understanding of our differences.  The more we learn, the more we grow; and the more we will appreciate our diversity!
